Fertility Management
Soil testing is done to determine fertility and pHs. The soil test is an excellent measure of soil fertility. It is an inexpensive way of maintaining good plant health and maximum crop productivity. Soil fertilty fluctuates throughout the growing season each year – the quantity and availability of mineral nutrients are altered by the addition of fertilizers, manure, compost, mulch, and lime or sulfur.
Fertility needs are determined on crop usage. Yield potential is used to determine how much of each nutrient to use in a season. In-season leaf sampling and nitrate monitoring determines if more or less fertility may be needed during the season. Attention is paid to leave the fertility of the soil as good, if not better, than when we first rented the farm.
